Best Practices for Cleaning a Glass Stovetop

Best Practices for Cleaning a Glass Stovetop

What stovetop do you have in your kitchen?

What stovetop do you have in your kitchen? While gas stoves heat up more quickly, electric stovetops are safer to use. The electric stovetops are often topped with ceramic and glass, and this means that there are ways to damage them that you might not immediately realize.

Don’t Use the Scrubbing Side of the Sponge

Sponges are immensely useful when you’re washing the dishes and cleaning off the countertop. But when you use one to clean off your glass stovetop, you need to be careful. Wiping the stovetop with the softer side of the sponge is perfectly fine. Just don’t use the rough, scrubby side. If you do, you might leave unsightly scratches behind.

No Steel Wool

Steel wool, which is also a good idea when cleaning around your kitchen, might not be the best idea for your glass stovetop. Think about the kinds of damage the rough side of the sponge can leave behind. The steel wool can do that same type of damage, only much worse. Instead of scratches, you’ll leave pits on the stove that will allow bits of food and grease to slide into and get stuck. Instead, try cutting away the residue with a razor blade, holding it at a forty-five-degree angle.

Wait for it to Cool

This should go without saying, but cleaning any stovetop while it’s hot is a bad idea. It doesn’t matter if it is made of glass or ceramic and has metal burners instead of panels. Cleansing solutions will burn while the stove is on, which will leave stains of their own.

No Glass Cleaner

Glass cleaner is great for cleaning windows and glass coffee tables, and other parts of your home that feature a lot of glass. So you might think it’s fine to use it on your glass stovetop. The ammonia in the glass cleaning solutions will also damage the stovetop. You’re much better off using white vinegar instead.
