Guide to Cleaning Your Stovetop

Guide to Cleaning Your Stovetop

Keeping your stovetop clean is never an easy task.

Keeping your stovetop clean is never an easy task. Regardless of how clean you may otherwise be, it’s likely that your stovetop has a layer of grease and grime that you dread taking care of. Cleaning your stove top doesn’t need to be frightening! Each type of stove top requires a slightly different method, but overall they’re more straightforward than you might expect.

Electric Coil Stoves

To clean an electric coil stove, you will want to start by turning your burners on and to high heat for a few minutes to start by burning off any caked on residue. Let them cool completely and then remove the coils and drip pans, setting the coils aside. Give the drip pans a preliminary wash in warm soapy water and then coat them with a mixture of baking soda and vinegar and let them sit for at least 15 minutes before washing them once more. Any remaining residue on the coils can be cleaned off using a dry toothbrush followed by a damp lint-free cloth. Lastly, de-grease your stove top by starting with a wet cloth followed by a scrub with a sponge and dish soap. If there are tough stains or buildup, use your baking soda and vinegar mix once more.

Gas Stoves

Start by setting aside your grates and burner covers to soak in warm soapy water for as long as necessary to remove caked on grime. If the grates are excessively dirty, you might try placing them in a bag of white vinegar overnight. Check the holes along the burners to ensure that no dirt or food particles have gotten inside them. Clean your stovetop in much the same manner as the electric stove — start by wiping the entire unit down with a damp cloth and then use a soapy sponge followed by a mixture of baking soda and vinegar for tough spots.

Smooth Top Stoves

Stovetops with a smooth finish are often assumed to be more delicate than they actually are. You do need to take care not to scratch them, but in most cases, you can clean them with some vigor. Start the cleaning process by wiping the entire stovetop down with vinegar. Next, sprinkle a layer of baking soda over the whole thing and place a damp towel over the top for at least 15 minutes. This will give the baking soda enough time to complete the chemical reaction needed to break down grime. Once enough time has passed, grab a non-scratch scrub brush and get to work. It may take time to get rid of the built-up, but with a little elbow grease, you’ll have it shining like new.
