Tips for Cleaning Your Mattress

Tips for Cleaning Your Mattress

Your mattress needs to be cleaned too!

Your mattress may be the most comforting and supportive piece of furniture in your home. You spend a lot of time there, in fact, the recommendation is that you spend a third of every day there. So how often do you clean it? For most people that answer is “not often” and for some, it’s “never”, but that’s going to change with these tips.

What’s There To Clean?

The short answer is a lot. Mattresses often have a whole host of nasty stuff in them. This includes allergens like dust mites, pet dander, and dead skin cells. It can also include fungal or mold spores, which you can’t see but that can make you sick over time, which grows because people tend to sweat overnight and that sweat makes for a moist mattress environment (mold loves it). There also can be bacteria, usually from the skin cells mattress (or from make-up that you forgot to remove). Finally, if you ever snack in bed, there’s traces of food and probably the by-products of insects, like ants and roaches.

Clean it Up

For this mission, the vacuum is your number one sidekick, but how often you do it, will depend on your needs. The bare minimum should be to vacuum when you do seasonal deep clean (think spring cleaning and the big holiday clean), but most people will be okay if they vacuum the mattress every 3-4 months. If you or someone else in the home has allergies, however, you should probably be vacuuming your mattress every month to cut down on the allergens that collect there. Once you’re ready to start vacuuming, make sure that the vacuum is clean (especially the filter)  and there are no blocks in the hose so it has maximum suction. Use the upholstery attachment to vacuum the whole mattress, then the crevice attachment to get into the seams. Finally, vacuum the bed frame, baseboard, and around and under the bed as well, then empty and thoroughly clean the vacuum (including the filters).

What Else?

Once you’re done vacuuming, you should spot clean any stains on the mattress. Try not to get the mattress too damp. If you’d like to disinfect it, don’t reach for the bleach – it’s too harsh for the fabric of your mattress.  Choose a safe anti-bacterial spray, and again, try not to get the mattress too wet. The goal is a light cover of spray that will dry quickly. Let the disinfecting spray and any spot cleaning you did dry completely before you put sheets on the mattress.
