Tips for Preventing the Flu

flu season

Don’t let the flu get you down. Check out some tips on how to stop it this season!

As we all start spending more time inside to avoid the chill, kids start sneezing and sniffling on the way home from school, and fall transitions into winter, flu season is just getting started. By maintaining your health habits throughout flu season in addition to getting a flu shot from your doctor, you can ensure a sniffle-free season. Here are some tips for keeping your body healthy during the stressful flu season.

Cover & Clean

You have heard it before (and you probably remind your children of it!)—cover your mouth and nose and clean your hands after coughing or sneezing. By covering your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough, you prevent a huge number of particles from entering the air and spreading to those around you. Also, clean your hands frequently and especially after coughing or sneezing. Washing your hands regularly with soap and warm water will help protect you from germs and help prevent spreading any virus you might have to your family or co-workers.

Avoid Close Contact and Contamination

If you know that someone is sick, avoid having any close contact with them. If you can keep your distance, it will be harder for any flu bacteria or infected particles to be coughed or sneezed over your way. Beyond avoiding close contact with infected people, clean and disinfect the surfaces you use frequently. Take care to wipe down things like your desk at work, your cell phone, and kitchen counters at home that could be full of germs. Think of places that people who are sick around you (at work or at home) touch and take care to sanitize them before using them yourself.

Stay Healthy!

The best way to prevent yourself from getting the flu is to stay healthy throughout the year. Practice healthy habits like washing your hands frequently, maintaining good personal hygiene, and getting plenty of sleep. Make sure that your diet limits processed foods and focuses on fresh heathy fruits and vegetables. Drink plenty of water and limit other sugary fluids like juices.
